Why are we reluctant if it\u2019s good for business?<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Accessibility <\/a>is the concept of whether a product or service can be used by everyone, however they encounter it. It\u2019s associated with laws that exist to aid people with disabilities. Over 1 billion people live with some form of disability. But it\u2019s about more. We all<\/em> have a disability at some point.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, it\u2019s also a legal requirement. Starting 2022, accessibility within Europe will be prominent within the digital industry. On top of the WCAG rulings, the European Accessibility Act (EAA)<\/a> published in June makes sure it\u2019s on the agenda. But still, to make a site or campaign accessible, has benefits for all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accessibility vs Usability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

They are often confused. This makes sense because they also often overlap. Both are vital parts of user experience (UX) design.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, usability is concerned with whether designs are effective, efficient and satisfying to use. In theory, this would require it to be accessible. Accessibility, on the other hand, is concerned with whether all <\/em>users are able to access an equivalent user experience, however they encounter a product or service.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they are taken into account, this should translate into better SEO, wider audiences and a more positive public image for your brand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of disabilities and accessible layouts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Disabilities can be incidental<\/strong> (e.g., sleep-deprivation), Environmental (e.g., using a mobile device underground), Genetic (e.g being born blind), amongst others. This means they are not always permanent. A slow internet connection, bright sunlight or a loud environment where audio can\u2019t be heard, are all temporary disabilities<\/strong>. If we take temporary or context induced handicaps<\/strong> into account, it affects almost all our audiences at some point in space and time.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is why an accessible layout<\/a> should be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
