That being said, how many <strong>books written by Arab authors<\/strong> have you read? Or how many do you know by name?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sudanese novelist<\/strong> al-Tayib Salih claims there is very little <strong>translated<\/strong> <strong>Arabic literature.<\/strong> Most people know the existence of the <strong>Quran,<\/strong> some religious scripts, and political news. Other than that, maybe Hollywood movies, where reality isn\u2019t quite loyally portrayed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has reinforced <strong>Western prejudices<\/strong> against Arabs. And she\u2019s not the only one: Edward Said made his fair share of points in his bestselling book \u201cOrientalism\u201d. Where he explains that our very dividing of the <strong>\u201cOrient\u201d<\/strong> as one big thing is as biased as it can be.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can <strong>literature<\/strong> better place us in other people\u2019s shoes?\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of literature\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do we read? Schools use <strong>books <\/strong>as a way of teaching vocabulary, <strong>literary resources,<\/strong> history, and more. It\u2019s also a great tool for people to find themselves in other worlds. To see themselves reflected in a certain character, scene, or play, much like the movies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But also, there is a more complex function to it, maybe the most difficult to teach. It\u2019s the ability to <strong>leave one\u2019s point of view<\/strong> to try to understand another way of feeling, thinking, and talking. Literature provokes the reader by displacing them from their everyday pathways. Since it\u2019s in a recreational spirit that books are read, they often find us more open to change. Maybe even have implications for our social behavior. What is being highlighted are the points of <strong>conflicts between Islam<\/strong> <strong>and Western culture<\/strong>, ignoring all existing similarities between the two cultures. And the Arab World on our screen is mostly a minority. Or extreme religious groups which don\u2019t necessarily represent these countries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we go back to Edward Said, who claimed that there may still be remnants of a colonial past in our discourse. Discourses and studies of the Orient as one simple object, exotic, faraway, paved the way for stereotypes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more so, more dangerous than stereotypes, a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.wcl.american.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1191&amp;context=tma\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study was done by Ghareeb&nbsp;<\/a>believes the media is biased in its coverage of the Middle East. His reasons include the Arab-Israeli conflict, general cultural bias, media ignorance about the history and origin of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the impact of the media&#8217;s tendency to think alike, amongst others.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Translation of Arab readings\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can <strong>translation<\/strong> of softer topics and books contribute to the general good?\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2005\/4\/11\/arab-world-lost-in-translation\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Al-Tayib Salih says\u00a0<\/a>the lack of <strong>Arab literature translated<\/strong> over the decades has an impact on our lack of understanding of Muslims and Islam.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To him, there is plenty to share and tell. From Mauritania to Oman, <strong>cultural festivals<\/strong> flourish. \u201cI don\u2019t think there is emptiness or aridity in the field of culture in the Arab world\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not only his point of view.
